Fayoum-A Sea In The Desert, Egypt

Fayoum Desert is on the floor of an ancient sea. Between about 250 million and 35 million years ago, water covered more of the surface of the earth than today. During that time, most of the present day Egypt was covered by Tethy’s Sea.

The sea received a large amount of sediment from the eroding African Continent which built up a thick sequence of sedimentary rocks. As the rocks formed, they included the remains of many different marine species, forming a rich fossil record.
